Object Description
The geisha Sankatsu of the Kasa-ya bordello accompanied by her servant. The title of the oban print states that it is rest stop number sixty-one, Kahiwabara station, from the “Sixty-nine Post Stations of the Kisokaido.” The geisha wears a large bamboo hat, a robe with design of paulownia and morning glories, and walks on geta (high wooden platform shoes). Her servant wears a blue-and-white striped robe and carries her belongings, including a large wicker trunk, a pair of brocade wrapped swords, and a folding table. A cloud-shaped cartouche set against the sky depicts a distant mountain, probably Fuji, with travelers and pine trees in the foreground. In addition to the title the print has a signature of Kuniyoshi with a publisher seal of Yawata-ya Sakujiro.
