Object Description
In this image we see a half-length portrait of a portly gentleman, the painter named Jan Asselyn, seated at a desk. He is seated in partial profile with his head turned toward his left shoulder, facing the viewer. Dressed in fine clothing of the period, he wears a black cloak over a white shirt with ruffled cuffs at his wrists and a large collar. He wears a tall crowned hat with a wide brim that turns up on his right side. Long curly hair grazes his shoulders. The man's right arm rests upon a desk draped with a cloth. Upon the desk are stacked papers and what appear to be books standing up. The background is clean and the shadows of the man's hair and eyes have been strengthened with a gray wash and the face has been retouched.
