Object Description
Grand piano, Fischer patent, in oak case with carved legs. This piano was commissioned by W. I. and Missouri Matilda Cook on the occasion of the marriage of their daughter, Jessie Will Cook, to W. P. Head of Sherman, Texas. The maker was J & C Fischer of New York and the wood is "Tiger" oak to complement the Head's parlor furniture. Jessie Cook Head died in childbirth in 1901 and the piano was moved to the Cook Ranch, Albany, Texas, in 1902. In 1927 it was sent to become part of a memorial room in the W. I. Cook Memorial Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, now the Cook-Fort Worth Children's Medical Center. In 1985 the Trustees of the Medical Center returned the piano to the Old Jail Art Center as a tribute to Missouri Matilda Nail Cook, who had built and endowed the Medical Center in 1927. Until its arrival in 1985, this piano had not been played in 58 years. Its craftmanship is such that it still retains its exceptional tone quality.
