Object Description
Fan, half circle border of woven coconut palm with two-inch fringe attached to a polished pearl shell handle. These fans are created on the outer islands of French Polynesia and the Cook Islands. Rito is a fine weaving tradition of the indigenous Māori. Fans are woven from the uncurled fiber of the coconut palm. Young fronds are cured in salt water and are meticulously woven together, then bound by a polished pearl shell to act as a functional but decorative handle.
