Object Description
Round table with inlaid woods forming circle bands. Orb in single pedestal base with three curved legs. Head of George Washington in center of table top. Made in 1876 for the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. This table was one of four made to show that Americans were capable of doing English marquetry. The original four tables each featured an intaglio portrait of one of the first four presidents of the United States --Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison. These tables were sample tables and a similar one could be ordered. Ironically, they were not successful and were withdrawn from the catalogue. This Washington table was found in a junk shop in New York City. The Adams and Jefferson tables have also been found in unlikely places. The Madison table is still missing.
