Object Description
A cubist work, done using a palette knife, of the crucifixion scene. Three men hang from crosses while a crowd gathers below. The central figure, Christ, faces the viewer from the center of the painting, the vertical element of his cross travels across the painting, occupying space from the top to the bottom, while the horizontal element occupies a major portion of the upper-ground of the painting, seeming to push aside all other elements so that the Christ Figure, writhing in pain, is the center focus. On each side of the Christ figure are the criminals also being crucified. The horizontal element of each of their crosses angels inward and downward, further creating an open space for the Christ figure while drawing the viewers eye to the crowd and the scull below. The crowd below is suggested through a series of circles representing the heads. Like the Christ figure, two of these are crowned with subtle halos. At the foot of Christ’s cross a scull can be seen, representing both death and scull mount where the crucifixion took place.
