A priest stands at the left and contemplates a man at the right who is hanging upside down by his roped feet; the roped man is nude except for a shirt that bunches up around his head. Scenes of violent death in which the protagonist is a man hanging upside down observed by a cloaked figure is a recurring motif in the sculpture and prints of Manzù. Prominent examples include a panel of the left door of Porta Vaticana (1964) and a bronze from 1963 in The Manzù Collection at Ardea, Italy.
