Van Jones
American,
(1951–1989)
Born in Cisco, Van Jones was raised in Albany, Texas, where he attended public schools. He enrolled in college at age 16 and graduated from Rice University in Houston, Texas in 1972. As part of his master's degree in Architecture from Rice University, Jones served as an apprentice in the New York office of I.M. Pei. He then returned to Houston and worked for the architectural firm, Sink & Associates. In 1983 Jones changed his profession from architect to full-time artist and quickly won recognition in Texas and the Southwest. A bold architectural style is often present in his work, as exemplified by one of his most widlly-circulated pieces, the poster for the 1984 world premiere of the Philip Glas opera AKHNATEN. His most ambitious project was a series of 18 panels, Sky Temple, completed for the San Antonio offices of Harte Hanks Communications Group. Showing a strong affinity for the vast west Texas landscape and skies, his work hangs in private, corporate, and museum collections in the US and Europe. Jones was represented by McMurtrey Gallery in Houston.
