Joseph Havel
American,
b. 1954
Joseph Havel is a modernist American sculptor who is a master of transforming the domestic and mundane into the poetic and timeless. In his hands, shirts, bed sheets, and drapes mutate from the ordinary into something otherworldly. Joseph Havel describes his artistic process as uncovering "the activity of still objects." The meaning associated with the objects he transforms is both amplified and changed; a psychological shift challenges viewers to reassess what they know and what they feel.
Currently lives and works in Houston, Texas; appointed Director of Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Art, Houston, 1991-2022.
