Burton Pritzker

American, b. 1941
Burton Pritzker received a degree in architecture from the University of California at Berkeley in 1965. He then worked for architects in Madrid, Copenhagen, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and finally established his own practice in Northern California. He found architecture limiting as an outlet for creativity and became interested in drawing, sculpture and photography. Pritzker eventually switched full-time to photography and in 1970 began exhibiting his work steadily. Burton’s architectural background provided a distinctive look and feel to his photographs and he was commissioned by Graphic designers to do annual reports. His work steered him toward many different areas of interest including industrial landscapes and finding a sense of “something else” in almost any topic. Burton Pritzker has done work for Lexus, Learjet and Pentagram. He has received awards from the American Institute of Graphic Artists, Communication Arts Magazine, the New York Art Directors Club, Mead Annual Report Show, Print Magazine, AR 100 Award Show and the Library of Congress. Since 1998, once again, Pritzker has focused exclusively on his personal work and in 2002 the University of Texas Press released his book, Texas Rangeland. The Museum of the Southwest, Midland, Texas, published his second book, Forgotten Planes, in 2009 in connection with a solo exhibit and acquisition of 85 prints. Selections of his work have been placed in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin, the Wittliff Collection at Texas State University, the El Paso Museum of Art and The Albuquerque Museum. He lives and works in Austin,Texas.
