Roy de Vries grew up in the Netherlands. He went to school where the predominantly Dutch faculty were able to recognize de Vries' drawing facility and encouraged him greatly to pursue his talent. De Vries' comes from a family of five children. His parents had a tragic marriage, his mother succumbing to the overwhelming forces of the timesL WW II, the economic crash of her husband's family, the confinement of island life, and the suffocation of patriarchal power politics in her relationship with her husband led her to escape into a world of morbid melancholy that caused her institutionalization at the time de Vries was seven years old. His father never really overcame the shock this caused in him and continues living his life in memory of that experience.
One of de Vries' early exposures to Modern painting came at the CauraƧaosch Stedelijk Museum where an exhibition of current Dutch paintings was in place. The riot of color left an indelible impression on his memory. He was thriteen. When de Vries was 16, he moved with his father and brothers to the United States. They settled in Miami. After serving in the Air Force, de Vries moves to Albuquerque, NM to attend the University of New Mexico where he earns a BFA in painting. After graduating, de Vries bicycled through Holland, Germany, Denmark, and France, and then returned to Albuquerque. de Vries later settled in San Diego, CA.
